Privacy policy

Mingo collects no personal data. Nothing you do in Mingo is sent to the developer or to anyone else.

What Mingo stores, and where

Mingo keeps its state in Chrome’s extension storage (chrome.storage.local) on your computer:

• the status you gave each word (New, Learning or Known) and when you set it;
• the word on the card and the recent card history, so the new tab, the popup, the side panel and the larger view agree;
• your settings (levels, rarity, the languages you know, statuses, how often the side panel changes word, pinyin, speech, volume, theme).

This storage stays on your device. It is not synced to your Google account. Removing Mingo deletes it. Settings › Export saves the same data as a file on your computer, and Import reads such a file back, only when you choose to.

The word list, sentences, stroke order and fonts are part of the extension itself. Mingo never downloads anything and contacts no server.

No website access

Mingo’s only permissions are storage and the side panel (to show its card in Chrome’s side panel). It has no access to the websites you visit: it cannot read, change or see any web page, your tabs or your browsing history. It runs only on its own pages: the new tab, the toolbar popup, the side panel and its larger view.

Speech

The speaker buttons use Chrome’s built-in speech (the Web Speech API). Mingo prefers a voice installed on your computer. If your computer has no Chinese voice, Chrome may use an online voice from Google, in which case Chrome sends the word or sentence being spoken to Google’s speech service. Mingo sends nothing itself. Speech plays only when you click a speaker, or on each new card if you switch on Read the card aloud.

No analytics, no ads

Mingo has no analytics, no tracking, no advertising, no account and no remote code.

This website

learnmingo.com has no analytics, no cookies and no third-party requests. The card on its home page keeps the statuses you click in your browser’s local storage for this site only.

If you write through the contact form, the site keeps what you send (your name if you give it, your email address and your message) so that I can read it and reply, plus a keyed hash of your IP address and your country, used only to stop floods of messages. Emails to the address below are kept the same way. You can ask me to delete them at any time.
